A simple change to allow a negative number in an expense itemization would make do-it-yourself payroll almost trivial to implement:

Payroll: $2,000 Payroll is an expense category
Payroll Liabilities: -220.10 Payroll liabilities is an Other Current Liability

Zoho should then enter a net amount of 1,779.90, payable to the employee.

Allowing negative numbers in expense itemization could make a ton of manual journal entries unnecessary.

    Payroll: 400 Withholding -30.90 Net check 369.40

Also, why not allow deposit to be treated as negative income. Think how much easier that makes it, for example, to deal with a bounced check.

These two changes would make a ton of manual journal entries unnecessary.
